TM 9-243USING THE ADZWARNINGALWAYS WEAR SUITABLE EYEPROTECTION.1 To use the adz, first clear the work area of branchesand debris.4Use short, choppy down strokes while keeping thehands in approximately the same position on thehandle. The right hand does not slide toward the lefthand as in swinging the ax, because the right handmust be in a position to keep control of the adz headat all times. Sliding the right hand to the end of thehandle would allow the adz blade face to bedeflected toward the user.NOTEAs wood chips accumulate on the worksurface, clear them away to prevent theircausing a deflection of the adz blade.Reverse the position of the hands if left-handed.2Block the timber to be worked on so it cannot slip, slide, or roll.3Straddle the timber and grip the adz handle withboth hands. The right hand should be held approxi-mately 12 to 15 inches above the left hand.45-5
