TM 9-243USING CLIMBING TOOLS - Continued4Begin the climb by driving one leg iron gaff (6) intothe pole so the gaff has a solid hold.5Place your weight on the embedded gaff and drivethe other gaff into the pole a little higher than thefirst.7While climbing, lean your body away from the poleto prevent the safety strap from slipping.8Keep both hands on the pole until the safety strapneeds moving.9With both gaffs firmly embedded in the pole, slidethe safety strap up the pole.10When desired height isreached, sink both gaffsinto the pole at the same level.11 Lean back with the safety strap around the poleslightly higher than the safety belt.
