Others are used for spreading andclamping operations.SCREW JACKSVertical screw jacks come in several capacities anddifferent lowered and raised heights. The screw movesup or down, depending on the direction the handle isturned. These jacks are used for many different pur-poses. They can be used to lift vehicles. They can alsobe used to raise heavy crates, small buildings, or otheritems too heavy to be raised by prying with wreckingbars.The vertical screw jack with collapsible handle is oper-ated by hand using the collapsible handle which isinserted in a socket.The vertical bell base screw jack is operated by handusing a steel bar handle which is inserted in the holes ofthe top housing or head.Another type of screw jack is called an outrigger jack. Itis equipped with end fittings which permit pulling partstogether or pushing them apart.20-2
