TM 9-243USING A WOODWORKER’S CHISELThe following procedure is designed for using a wood-worker’s chisel.WARNINGWEAR EYE PROTECTION. KEEP BOTHHANDS BACK OF THE CUTTING EDGEAT ALL TIMES.1 With rule and pencil, mark area (1) to be cut with thechisel.2Examine the grain of the wood, and place securelyin a vise (2) so you are cutting with the grain. Thewood should not be able to move in any direction.3Rough cuts are made with bevel side down (3)while smooth finishing cuts (4) are made with bevelside up.WARNINGNEVER CUT TOWARD YOURSELFWITH A CHISELCAUTIONUse short, rapid mallet blows to controldepth and length of cut.4Start your cut about 1/8 inch from the guide line (1).Using a chisel and mallet, make your cut toward thecenter (the waste area) to protect the edge.5Make small thin cuts. This prevents breaking orsplitting of the work. Check your guide marks oftento prevent overcutting.8Remove the last 1/8 inch using chisel and mallet tocomplete the job.26-3
