TM 9-243USING THE PORTABLE ELECTRIC DRILLWARNINGBEFORE USING ANY ELECTRICALTOOL, ALWAYS MAKE CERTAIN THETOOL IS EQUIPPED WITH PROPERGROUNDING FEATURES. FAILURE TOHAVE PROPER GROUNDING CANRESULT IN SERIOUS SHOCK.WARNINGALWAYS WEAR PROPER EYE PRO-TECTION WHEN WORKING WHEREFLYING PARTICLES MAY CAUSE EYEINJURY.1Select the proper bit (1) required for the task.NOTETo turn chuck key in either direction a firmgrasp of the chuck is required.2Fit the chuck key (2) into the side adjusting holebetween jaws (3) and chuck (4) and turn the keycounterclockwise until the chuck opens enough toadmit the bit shank (5).3Insert the bit and center the shank in the chuckjaws. Tighten jaws securely by turning the chuckkey clockwise.4Remove chuck key and store where key will notget lost.5Before drilling, make sure that the work is station-ary or firmly secured.6Using a punch or awl, make a small prick point (6)in the spot where the hole will be made. (This willprevent the drill bit from bouncing or slipping awayfrom the spot where the hole is to be drilled.)7Connect electric drill (7) to power source. Placethe drill bit on the marked spot and depress triggerswitch. Begin drilling, exerting firm but even pres-sure to keep the bit cutting.8Withdraw the bit frequently from the work to cleanchips from the bit flutes (8) and to allow the bit tocool.9Ease upon the drill pressure as the bit approachesthe other side of the work surface.10 After hole is completed, carefully withdraw rotatingdrill bit to prevent binding or breaking.
