TM 9-243USING A MACHINIST'S BENCH VISEWARNINGMAKE-SURE THE VISE IS BOLTEDSECURELY TO A BENCH OR TABLEAND THE SWIVEL BASE IS LOCKED.1Open jaws (1) of vise wide enough to allow you toinsert the object you want to clamp.CAUTIONUse brass or copper caps on vise jaws toprotect soft material when clamping.CAUTIONDo not strike vise with a heavy object or tryto hold large work in a small vise.2Insert object (2) to be clamped between vise jawsand tighten handle (3).3Work should be held firmly in place, but the jawsshould not be so tight that they mar the finish. Apiece of rawhide or leather may be used to protecthighly polished surfaces:NOTEWhen holding hard material in vise jawstightened by hand, give the vise handle asharp rap for final tightening.18-4
